Surroundings
A quarter now included in the left part of the Eixample, its name is called Sant Antoni after the market of the same name. Placed between the Rondas de Sant Pau and Sant Antoni streets, and the Gran Vía and Paral.lel avenues, it is a very centric area where the buildings of the University of Barcelona, the Casa Golferichs, and the market of Sant Antoni stand out. The latter is very popular, above all on Sunday mornings where we can find collectors of all kind buying and selling books, comic-books, magazines, films, etc. The quarter is also known for being the gay area of Barcelona, where plenty of bars, night spots and specialized stores have settled. On the streets of Sant Antoni we can find many modernistic buildings of great beauty.

The quarter became urban after two grand events: the first of them was the rising of the Sant Antoni market in 1872; the project is a work of the engineer and architect Antoni Rovira i Trias. The second event was the universal exhibition of 1929, ran by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, which involved as well the urbanization of all the surroundings of Plaza España square, the old Creu Coberta, and the Montjuic Mountain.
